Employability Issues for Experienced Workers

Hello Mr. Ridge. I feel a personal need to request that the subject of employability issues for individuals 45+ be acknowledged, and hopefully addressed. What I would like to know is whether or not your party is willing and able to address employability issues for individuals who are 45+ years of age, who live in the Etobicoke South riding, such as myself who find themselves in 'dire straights' because they are not able to secure employment, after searching for at least one year's time. Will any government monies be made available for training programs for experienced workers who live in your riding, who are Canadian-born? My immediate concerns deserve to be heard. Is this issue important enought to your party for it to be addressed before we go to the polls on Jan. 23rd?

The purpose of this email is to request a brief meeting to discuss how deeply myself, and numerous other women, have been discriminated against in our search for viable, gainful employment for 1 1/2 years. My personal thought is that I would love to work for an environmental organization, in any capacity, where I can make a valued contribution in taking steps to save our planet.

We (my friends and I) are all Canadian-born, white, women, 40+ yrs. of age, and we're continously being passed over for many jobs for which we are qualified. We participated in a job creation program last spring (almost a full year ago) during which we dealt with non-profit agencies to gain some experience, and to date, no followups have been scheduled by our EI counsellors, no training program referrals have been made, and job offers have not been forthcoming. Why are we being 'left out in the cold' by our city, and our government?

We've been declined for training programs. We've depleted our RRSP monies/savings. We've even been deemed ineligible for welfare because of residing in a subsidized apt. (that was obtained as an abused woman).

Why should we accept being treated in such an unfair way. We've reached the point of no return. Something has got to be done about this NOW! WE REALLY NEED YOUR ASSISTANCE in making a connection with the appropriate party (i.e. an ombudsman) as we've already voiced our concerns/frustration with the MPs' offices in our riding (for the other parties), asked for help/referrals for jobs, attended numerous job fairs, job finding clubs, and experienced workers programs.

We're fighting-mad, and totally disgusted by the numerous government-funded programs designed for new immigrants, (i.e. a program detailed in Jean Augustine's article in the Etobicoke Guardian months ago stating that JobStart is getting $400,000 worth of funding to run a program for immigrant professionals!) Hey, what about us?

To whom do we turn next for help? Should we call the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities for info? Should we (collectively) be putting in a grievance with the Human Rights Commission? We deserve to have 'an end to our daily suffering'.

I appreciate your being intensely-local and urban-oriented. I am requesting that you focus on our 'Day in the Life' reality of being the new minority, that is, a 40+, white, Canadian-born, unemployed woman. We deserve to be heard and want to have 'our day in court'. I am comfortable voicing my concerns to you and hope that you'll contact me as soon as possible to help me with my plight.

And most importantly, I am VERY interested in assisting the Green Party, as a volunteer if need be. Please call me directly at (416) 231-1695 to discuss the foregoing.

Respectfully yours,

Mary L. Moorhouse
